Though Villipoto was quick to take the lead, it was Factory Metal Works’ Vince Friese that scored the holeshot. RV secured the front before the end of the opening lap though, followed by Reed and JGRMX’s Justin Bratyon in third. Friese steadily dropped down the ranks after his impressive start, falling back to 14th by the checkers.

Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey settled into fourth-place early on with GEICO Honda’s Wil Hahn in fifth and Stewart in sixth. Bubba got the best of Hahn in the opening laps and started to hunt-down Dungey for fourth-place. With 14 laps remaining, JS7 got past the KTM ace as well. Out front Villopoto maintained his lead but Reed held steady, not allowing the defending Supercross champion to build an insurmountable gap. Brayton persisted in third but his tenure in podium position would soon come to an end.

One lap after besting Dungey, Stewart moved past Brayton into third-place. With the race reaching mid-point Team Muscle Milk Honda’s Justin Barcia, who was stuck outside the top-five after a bad start, attempted to continue his ascent up the ranks but with 12 laps remaining Bam Bam went down. The Honda rider recovered in 10th and was able to finish off the contest, advancing past a handful of riders to score seventh.

Out front, RV had a multi-second lead over Reed, who was busy trying to keep Stewart from passing into second. The Suzuki rider was in strong form though, and during the latter stages of the race he pushed past Reed for the runner-up spot.

Reed also faced pressure late in the game from Dungey, who was keen to find his way to a podium finish. Reed held strong and Dungey came up short, in the end, with the KTM rider trailing in fourth. Brayton managed to hold to fifth ahead of Dungey’s teammate, Ken Roczen. Barcia finished the night in seventh with Hahn in eighth.

The back-and-forth points battle shifts to Villopoto’s favor and he leaves Oakland with the red-plate. Reed sits in second-place seven points adrift of the leader followed by Roczen in third.
